AMATEO ANNUAL CONFERENCE 2020
On-line Zoom conference: 14–15 May 2020
Amateo annual conferences are usually hosted in one of our member countries. Due to the development of pandemic events across Europe, we have decided to offer virtual conference content for the first time this year. The conference on health and wellness will take place on May 14 and 15, 2020, via the Zoom platform.
The importance of cultural engagement on health and well-being is often overlooked by the general public as well as the professional public. That’s why the conference aims to show through lectures, debates and roundtables and examples of good practice how culture is changing the lives of individuals and society. This is even more important in the current situation, as we recognize the many artistic initiatives by which artists and amateur artists alleviate the stress of quarantine, and give to people inspiration to join the creative work themselves. As such, arts interventions are often low-risk, highly cost-effective, integrated and holistic treatment options for complex health challenges to which there are no current solutions.
More collaboration between culture and health sectors can also enrich cultural capital by ensuring that everyone has equitable access to the arts in community and wellbeing settings across the European region.
Through inspiring keynote speakers, roundtable discussions and workshops we challenge you to explore the striking impact of creative and cultural activities and the opportunities for collaboration between the participatory arts and health & wellbeing sectors.

DAY 1: Thursday 14th May

- Victoria Hume – The Culture, Health and Wellbeing Alliance is a national organisation representing everyone who believes that cultural engagement can transform our health and wellbeing. Victoria will discuss work in culture, health and wellbeing across England, as it was immediately prior to the covid crisis – and discuss how cultural organisations and creative individuals working with health and wellbeing are adapting their skills and experience on a daily basis to support their communities. - Evelyne Van Hecke – Grounder/director of the Belgium arts group Moving Ground (awarded the 2019 Amateo Award), improving children’s lives (struggling with poverty and cultural division). More info…

- Katerina Klementova – NIPOS, Czech Republic: What’s up in the EC? Culture and Health & Wellbeing. Reporting on the work of the International OMC sub-Group on Health & Wellbeing, established by the European Commission in 2017, the contribution will give an outline of current trends and practices in the field of Arts, Health & Wellbeing in Europe, how they were gathered by more than 20 Member States. As well as presenting the recommendations of the OMC group in this specific area, the session will direct participants to a range of resources and further reading that are available on this topic. - Claudia Schnugg – Researcher and curator with an interdisciplinary background in social sciences, business administration, cultural sciences, and the arts (Austria). Did you know that art can reduce your risk of illness and increase life expectancy? So: ATTENTION, contemporary art and culture can change your life! - Veronika Kořínková – EDUdrama, Slovakia is the first centre in Slovakia to organise interactive experience programmes for all ages (children, adolescents, families, adults and seniors). The EDUdrama platform aims to introduce drama education and its methods into the educational system, as well as to the wider public awareness, to humanise the society through drama education and to cultivate its social and artistic potential and abilities.
